BankID identity check with a foreign passport

If you already have BankID and are asked to verify your identity, a foreign passport or identity document can be scanned by selecting “Kun kontroll” (Only check). BankID says failure of that digital check does not by itself remove your existing BankID.

Start in the updated BankID app

BankID is asking many existing app users to verify their identity again. Update the app, have a valid passport or national identity card available and follow the message when your turn comes. The check involves your document and face. This is verification of an existing BankID, rather than an application for your first BankID.

Select Only check for a foreign document

BankID says users with a foreign passport or identity document can choose Kun kontroll. Its official instructions cover passports, including foreign passports, and national identity cards. Use those instructions instead of old advice about SMS codes or BankID på mobil. Documents accepted for first issuance and documents that an app can scan are separate questions.

If scanning the document fails

BankID’s checked information says you can keep using the app as before if digital scanning of a foreign document fails. You will receive another message if a check becomes necessary. Contact your bank if you need another form of identification. Do not assume that a particular camera, passport or residence card is supported without confirmation. The bank can explain the alternatives available in your situation.

A new phone requires a different activation

Changing phones requires activating the app again. That differs from verification in an app that still works. Follow BankID’s activation guide or ask your bank. DNB says an active BankID agreement is required before app activation. If you do not have the requested document, ask the bank how to proceed. Avoid deleting a working setup before confirming your next steps.
