Instalments or a credit card?

Compare the total repayment for the same purchase and repayment period. Store financing can involve a separate credit-card agreement, rather than a completely different product type. Interest-free offers, payment deferrals and ordinary card borrowing have different conditions.

The store may not be the lender

Elkjøp lists Avida as the credit provider for Handlekonto; the agreement includes a credit card after a credit assessment. That product has different prices from Avida Gebyrfri Gold in our catalogue. OneCall uses Klarna. Identify the lender and specific agreement before comparing it with an existing credit card. Two products from the same bank can have different interest and fees.

Use the same amount and repayment period

Elkjøp’s published ordinary-instalment example is NOK 20,000 over 12 months: effective annual interest 22.13%, credit cost NOK 2,251 and total repayment NOK 22,251. It lists nominal interest of 14.9% and a NOK 50 period fee. Compare a written card example for the same amount and time, including fees. Examples using different amounts or periods can make a direct percentage comparison misleading.

Check what happens after a deferral

Payment deferral does not necessarily mean free repayment. Elkjøp lists deferral fees and different conditions when the full balance remains unpaid at the end. A card’s interest-free period applies only as its own agreement describes. Paying only the minimum can leave an interest-bearing balance. Ask for the final amount and repayment schedule before signing.

Include subscriptions and exit conditions

A phone subscription may form a substantial part of the full cost. Telenor says Splitt requires a subscription when purchasing; Telia lists a NOK 99 monthly fee if you leave Telia and continue the instalments. A low handset payment alone may therefore be an incomplete comparison. Check early repayment too. Start with a monthly amount you can afford alongside necessary expenses.

Questions and answers

Are instalments always cheaper than a credit card?

No. The agreement and repayment pattern determine the cost. Compare the lender’s total repayment, fees and schedule for the same purchase.

Is Elkjøp Handlekonto Avida Gebyrfri Gold?

No. The checked Elkjøp page describes a separate Avida credit agreement with its own prices. Do not apply Gold’s prices to store financing.

Why check effective annual interest?

It expresses annual credit cost with relevant fees. Also read the amount, repayment period and total in the representative example; the percentage alone does not explain the whole purchase.
