New rules during a bank transition
Stø has taken responsibility for issuing BankID. BankID describes common rules from October 2026, including eligibility for D-number holders. It also explains that banks have different system limitations during the transition. Banks still handle identity checks, administration and customer support. Get a specific answer from your bank even when a general article says D-numbers are now supported.
Check actual support at the bank
Nordea answers yes to getting BankID without a Norwegian national identity number. DNB’s checked BankID page still requires that number and directs D-number holders to its Without BankID login. This is a difference in published practice. It does not guarantee approval at Nordea or mean DNB will never support D-numbers.
Questions to ask before applying
Ask: “Can you currently create BankID for my D-number? Which identity documents do you accept? Do I need an appointment in person? Do I need an active account? Which login is available if BankID is not supported yet?” Explain your document type, but do not email passport copies to an unverified address. Use the bank’s confirmed channel. A D-number alone does not satisfy every other requirement.
An account and electronic identity are separate
A D-number is a Norwegian identity number, rather than a BankID agreement. You can ask about an account and alternative bank login while BankID is being arranged. DNB describes a code-device and PIN login for D-number holders. It provides access to DNB online banking but must not be treated as BankID for other banks or public services.
Questions and answers
Is a D-number the same as a national identity number?
No. The Tax Administration describes them as different Norwegian identity numbers. Tell the bank which one you actually have.
Do all banks support D-numbers now?
That has not been established. BankID describes system limitations during the transition. Confirm the current process with your chosen bank.
Can I pay someone for guaranteed BankID?
This guide documents no service that guarantees BankID. Your bank handles the identity check and setup. Contact the bank directly for a specific answer.
Your next step
D-number holders can qualify under BankID’s new rules from October 2026 if the other requirements are met. This does not mean every bank can issue it immediately. Nordea and DNB currently publish different practical requirements.
