Who the documented process is for
DNB says this account-opening route without a valid passport is available only to asylum seekers and refugees. It lists an asylum-seeker certificate or residence permit, a D-number and other evidence of identity. Ask the bank before applying if you have a different residence status or several missing documents. Choose the application category that accurately describes your situation.
Apply before the identification appointment
Start with the bank’s application for customers without BankID, then follow its instructions for visiting a local DNB branch. Alongside residence and number documents, it gives examples such as a driving licence, photo bank card, national identity card or other evidence. Examples do not mean each document is sufficient on its own. Confirm which originals to bring and whether you need an interpreter.
Ask for basic banking first
Explain whether you need an account for wages, support payments or bills. Ask which account, debit card and login the bank can provide after verifying your identity. A credit card borrows money; a debit card uses the money in your account. These are different services with separate assessments. You do not need to apply for credit simply to explain that you need an ordinary account.
BankID is a separate decision
An approved bank-account relationship does not establish that the same documents qualify you for BankID. BankID requires a separate agreement and identity check. A bank may offer a login that works only in its own online banking. Ask whether this can be used while BankID is unavailable. Contact the bank to update your documents if you later receive a new passport or identity number.
Questions and answers
Is a residence permit enough on its own?
DNB lists several documents for this manual process, including a D-number and evidence of identity. Ask the bank to confirm what is needed in your case.
Does this apply to everyone who has lost a passport?
No. DNB limits the described no-valid-passport process to asylum seekers and refugees. Other applicants should confirm its ordinary document requirements.
Will I automatically get BankID or a credit card?
No. An account, BankID and a credit card are separate services. Ask for a specific answer about each service you need.
Your next step
DNB describes a manual bank-account process for asylum seekers and refugees without a valid passport. Apply first, then complete the identity check with the documents the bank requests. It is not a general route for everyone without a passport and does not automatically provide BankID or credit.
