Credit card application declined: what to do next

A declined credit-card application means the issuer has not approved that particular request. Start with the decision and the information actually used. Do not choose another card based on an unverified promise that “everyone is approved”.

Ask which decision you received

Distinguish a declined new-card application from a declined limit increase or technical application failure. Morrow says card applications are assessed using a credit check and the information you supplied. Limit increases also consider payment history and tax figures. Ask the bank to explain the decision and whether documentation, identification or processing remains unfinished.

Check information without guessing the cause

Review the name, address, income and debt details you submitted. If you think a payment remark is incorrect or not updated after payment, contact the credit-information agency and relevant creditor. Brønnøysundregistrene says it records only some types of remarks; contact a credit-information agency for a full overview. A clear record in one service is not necessarily the complete picture.

New arrivals should clarify documentation

Do not assume that time in Norway, nationality or a D-number caused the refusal unless the bank says so. Ask for the specific card’s identity, residence and documented-income requirements. Morrow publishes a minimum age of 20, a registered address in Norway and no payment remarks. Other cards have their own conditions. Meeting published minimum requirements still does not guarantee credit approval.

Review your finances before taking more credit

If you struggle to pay existing bills, a new card application is not an established solution. NAV offers free financial and debt advice. Prepare income, necessary expenses, debts and payment claims. If you simply need to spend money already in your account, ask your bank about a debit card instead of additional card borrowing.

Questions and answers

Will another bank approve me?

We do not know. Each issuer assesses applications. A refusal does not establish a particular probability of approval elsewhere.

Does a refusal mean I have a payment remark?

Not necessarily. Morrow describes an assessment of the credit check and application information. Check the records rather than assuming the reason.

Where can I get help if debt is the problem?

NAV provides free financial and debt guidance by phone on 55 55 33 39 and through your local NAV office.
